How to Play 9 Ball Pool: 6 Easy Steps and Key Rules
TLDR: 9 ball uses balls 1 through 9. On every shot, you must hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first. If any ball goes in, you keep shooting. Whoever legally sinks the 9 ball wins. You can win early with a combo or a carom into the 9.

- The one big rule: lowest ball first
- How to win early
- Fouls and ball in hand
- Tips to play better
9 ball is fast and exciting. It is a favorite in tournaments. I have played it for many years in leagues and tournaments. Here is how to play. The steps follow the general rules of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA). Local rules can differ, so check yours.
Step 1: Rack the Balls
Use balls 1 through 9. Rack them in a diamond shape. The 1 ball goes at the front, on the foot spot. The 9 ball goes in the center. The other balls can go anywhere in the diamond. Make the rack tight.
Step 2: Break
The breaker places the cue ball behind the head string. The cue ball must hit the 1 ball first. Under WPA rules, a legal break must make a ball or drive at least four balls to the rails. If the 9 goes in on a legal break, the breaker wins.
Step 3: Push Out Option
Right after the break, the next player may choose a “push out.” This is a special shot to move the cue ball to a better or safer spot. The other player then decides who shoots next. You can read more in my post on push outs.
Step 4: Hit the Lowest Ball First
This is the key rule. On every shot, the cue ball must hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first. If the 3 ball is the lowest, you must hit the 3 first. After that, any ball that goes in counts. You keep shooting as long as you make a ball legally.
Step 5: Use Combos and Caroms
Because any ball can go in after you hit the lowest ball first, you can play combos. For example, hit the 2 into the 9 and sink the 9. That wins the game. This is why 9 ball can end fast.
Step 6: Win by Sinking the 9
Whoever legally sinks the 9 ball wins. It does not matter how many balls are left. If the 9 goes in on a foul, it is spotted, and the game goes on.
Fouls and Ball in Hand
Common fouls:
- Not hitting the lowest ball first
- Scratching
- No ball goes in and no ball hits a rail after contact
- Knocking a ball off the table
After a foul, the other player gets ball in hand anywhere on the table. Under WPA rules, three fouls in a row loses the game.
Tips to Play Better
- Plan your pattern. Think about the next two or three balls, not just one.
- Play safe when you need to. If you cannot make the lowest ball, hide the cue ball.
- Watch for combos on the 9. Easy wins are easy to miss.
- Control speed. Good position in 9 ball is mostly about speed.
